Phylum Magnoliophyta – Subphylum Seagrasses – Class Liliopsida – Subclass Alismatidae – Order Potamogetonales
Robust perennial marine herbs with stout rhizomes. RhLotnes irregularly monopodially branched, rooting at the nodes. Roots simple or branched. Leaves alternate with distinct blade and sheathing base. Tannin cells numerous. Inflorescence racemose, of several spike-like units. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, or sometimes male only; perianth absent; stamens 3 (rarely 4), sessile; pollen filiform; pollination hydrophilous; carpel one, 1-ovuled with a sessile ornate stigma. Fruit a drupe.
Taxonomic notes: Only one genus, Posidonia.
