Biology:
Studies of pollen fertility, chromosome number and karyotypes have shown that this 'species' is a sterile hybrid, most probably with S. lautus (2n = 40) and S. biserratus (2n = 100) as parent species. S. xorarius has 2n = 70 chromosomes, and all field and herbarium collections examined are quite sterile.
