Description:
Tufted perennial or occasionally with a short rhizome clothed with firm broad scales; culms to 75 cm high; lower leaf sheaths usually purplish; leaf blades flat, inrolling on drying, to 25 cm long, usually glabrous.
Panicle more or less lanceolate, loosely contracted with erect or nearly spreading branches, to 20 cm long; spikelets 3-5-flowered, purplish, greenish or straw-coloured; glumes c. 1-2 mm long; lemmas 1.75-3 mm long, variably pubescent on the lower part of the back including the internerves.
