Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum

Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 480 (1753).

Synonymy: Cryophytum nodiflorum (L.)L. Bolus, S. Afr. Gard. 17:327 (1927); Gasoul nodiflorum (L.)Rothm., Notizbl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 15:413 ( 1941 ); Psilocaulon caducum sensu J. Black, Fl.S. Aust. 337 (1948).

Common name: Slender iceplant, small iceplant.

Description:
Densely papillose with rather slender procumbent stems; leaves all opposite except one sometimes subtending the flower, subterete, channelled above, dilated and half clasping at the base, 8-15 mm long, c. 1 mm broad, withering and falling early.

Flowers sessile, axillary or terminal; ovary 4-5 mm long, 5-ribbed; perianth lobes subterete, unequal, 4-6 mm long, 3 longer than the other 2; petaloid staminodes white, equalling the longer perianth lobes.

Seeds under 1 mm long, faintly granular on 1 margin; septa hard, broad, not furrowed.

Taxonomic notes: This species has been confused with Psilocaulon tenue but the numerous papillae and subterete perianth lobes are very characteristic.
