Description:
Short-lived perennial to 120 cm; leaf blades to 20 cm x 8 mm, acute, glabrous and shiny; spike 10-30 cm; rhachis flexuose, slender, c. 1 mm diam., often branched.
Spikelets 5-25 x 2-10 mm, with 6-12 fertile and 0-2 rudimentary florets; glumes lanceolate or narrowly oblong, between one-quarter and one-half the length of the spikelet; lemma unawned or with an awn to 5 mm.

Biology:
New Zealand cultivars "Grasslands Manawa" and "Grasslands Ariki" have been sown in Australia, but in most cases the hybrid occurs as part of a complex of species and hybrids forming a perennial pasture.
