Limonium lobatum

Citation: Kuntze, Rev. Gen. Pl. 2:395 (1891).

Synonymy: Statice lobata L.f., Suppl. 187 (1781); S. thouinii Viv., Elenchus Plantarum Horti J. Car. Dinergro 34 (1802); L. thouinii (Viv.)Kuntze, Rev. Gen. Pl. 2:396 (1891).

Common name: Winged sea-lavender.

Description:
Annuals with few to many leaves restricted to the basal rosette of the often robust base; leaves oblanceolate, 3-20 cm long, 10-50 mm broad, obtuse and mucronate, tapering often into a petiole-like base, shallowly to deeply lobed, with secondary and tertiary veins visible, with hairs along the margins.

Inflorescence a rounded to almost corymbose panicle with the branches more or less spirally arranged and with each part-inflorescence with a prominently 3-winged base with a number of spikelets each with 1 or 2 flowers densely clustered in 1 or 2 rows at the apex; outermost sterile bracts large and with 2 often recurved horns; 2 inner sterile bracts membranous and with the midrib scarcely visible; calyx 11-12 mm long, pale-blue, with the tube more or less funnel-shaped and glabrous, with dark midribs continued into narrow triangular lobes which alternate with broader membranous ones; lobes short, often toothed or lacerated and spreading in fruit; corolla with the spreading lobes truncate, rarely emarginate, yellow.

Distribution:  S.Aust.: LE, GT, FR, EA, EP, NL, MU, YP, SL, KI, SE.   W.Aust.; N.S.W.; Vic.   Native to southern Spain, North Africa to south-western Asia.

Conservation status: naturalised
