Taxonomic notes: The species belongs to Section Genuini, see note to J. pauciflorus. Johnson (1963) mentioned that it was often confused with J. usitatus from which it differs in the longer more acute perianth-segments which often exceed the capsule and in the more erect and tufted inflorescence. The only other described species with sunken stomata are J. australis and J. flavidus.
