Taxonomic notes:
The above description is taken from J. Black (1952) as H. stricta var. oblonga and Willis (1973) as H. australis. Hoogland (1974) Kew Bull. 29:156 cited H. stricta var. oblonga as a synonym. The type of that variety is the only specimen known to me from S. Aust. to have been identified as belonging to this species despite the statements by both Hoogland and Willis that the species does occur in S. Aust. The type of var. oblonga shows characters somewhat intermediate between H. riparia and H. aspera and all three occur on KI. H. stricta also occurs in Vic.
