Common name: Grass-leaved (or bottle-brush) hakea.

Description:
Shrub or tree to over 8 m high, branches erect, branchlets softly pubescent, at length glabrescent; leaves ascending, narrow-linear, 8-26 cm X 3-10 mm, with 3-9 longitudinal veins, the apex acuminate, 1.5-5 mm long, fragile.

Involucral cone elongating to c. 3 cm, inflorescence a raceme of c. 150-500 deep-pink, orange-red or red flowers; rhachis 5-9 cm long, glabrous to pubescent; pedicel 0.8-3.5 mm long; perianth 3.3-7.5 mm long, limb 1.7-2.5 mm long; anthers linear, 1.2-1.7 mm long; gland oblique, entire, 0.3-0.4 mm long in lateral view; pistil 16.5-23.5 mm long; pollen-presenter a cone 1-1.7 mm long with a broad-elliptic thick basal flange 0.6-0.8 mm long.

Fruit 1.4-2.6 cm long, smooth, the pericarp often breaking free, in median view broadly ovate-acuminate, 1.2-2 cm wide, in lateral view ovate, 1-1.4 cm wide, with a broad beak terminated by a narrow beak c. 1 mm long, with 2 broad layers of wood beside the lower half of the seed cavity; seed obliquely obovate, 10-22 X 5.5-7.5 mm, body 5-10 mm long, wing entire or erose at the apex, narrowly decurrent down one side, brown-black.

Distribution:  In sandy soil of dunes, swales and plains, in sclerophyllous scrubland, woodland or open forest.

S.Aust.: NW, NU, GT, EP.   W.Aust. (Old records from Fulham and Henley Beach, SL region of S.Aust. are probably of cultivated origin).

Conservation status: native

Flowering time: mid July — Oct.
