Epilobium billardieranum billardieranum

Synonymy: E. glabellum sensu J. Black, Fl. S. Aust. 639 (1952), partly, non Forster f. (1786).

Common name: Robust (or smooth) willow-herb.

Description:
Inflorescence densely covered with appressed hairs and without erect hairs; leaves ovate, 0.6-1.8 cm broad, with margin densely and regularly serrulate-dentate, with, usually 16-40 teeth on each side.

Published illustration: Raven & T. Raven (1976) New Zealand D.S.I.R. Bull. 216:fig. 53.

Distribution:    W.Aust.; N.S.W.; Vic.; Tas.   New Zealand.

Flowering time: mainly Nov. — March.

Biology: Not Applicable

Taxonomic notes: In other parts of Australia subsp. billardieranum is usually restricted to coastal areas, but in S.Aust. subsp. cinereum also occurs in this region probably because the wetter regions of this state are mainly restricted to the coastal areas. Although there is often not a great difference between the leaf shape of subsp. billardieranum and subsp. intermedium the latter usually has at least some glandular hairs on the inflorescence and especially in the groove between the carpels of immature fruits.
