Citation: R. Br., Prod. Fl. Nov. Holl. 587 (1810).

Derivation: After William Dampier, 1652-1715, English buccaneer and explorer, who collected botanical specimens on the north-west coast of Australia in 1699 as commander of H.M.S. Roebuck.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: Dampieras.

Description:
Undershrubs with a tomentum of branched non-glandular hairs; leaves cauline, sessile, entire or dentate, flat or with revolute margins.

Inflorescence a terminal leafy thyrse; flowers mostly in small shortly pedunculate cymes, pedicellate, strongly zygomorphic; sepals 5, very small; corolla 2-lipped, shortly tubular with a persistent base, deeply split posteriorly, tomentose outside, glabrous inside, blue to violet or pink, rarely white; lobes broadly winged, unequal, the 2 posterior erect, almost free from the anterior 3, with prominent auricles which clasp the indusium; stamens epigynous; anthers cohering in a tube around the style; style simple, straight, shorter than the corolla, glabrous; indusium 2-lipped, usually glabrous; stigma with 2 prominent obtuse lobes; ovary l-celled, with a solitary erect basal ovule.

Fruit dry, indehiscent, often hardly larger than the ovary; seed solitary, endospermic.

Distribution:  About 60 species endemic to Australia, mostly in W.Aust.
