Description:
Perennial to 50 cm high; stem much-branched, ribbed, minutely scabrous, becoming woody at the base; basal leaves oblanceolate, narrowed at the base, lyrate-pinnatifid, soon lost; cauline leaves narrowly oblanceolate to oblong, the lower ones pinnatifid, the upper sinuate to entire, 2-6 cm long, 2-12 mm wide, dark-green, scabrous.

Capitula solitary, 10-20 mm diam.; involucre campanulate, 10-20 mm long; bracts lanceolate, pale or reddish, glabrous; appendages patent, with 3-5 subequal spines 1-3 mm long, radiating from a central point, straw-coloured; outer florets patent; corollas purple.

Achenes c. 4 mm long, pallid, streaked reddish; pappus of bristles 1-2 mm long.

Distribution:  On roadsides.

S.Aust.: SL.   Native to southwestern Europe.

Conservation status: naturalised

Flowering time: most of the year.
