Casuarina cristata

Citation: Miq., Rev. Crit. Cas. 70 (1848) subsp. pauper (F. Muell. ex Miq.) L. Johnson, Nuytsia 1:265 (1972).

Synonymy: Casuarina pauper F. Muell. ex Miq., Nederl. Kruidk. Arch. 4:98 (1856); C. lepidophloia sensu J. Black, FI.S. Aust. 15 (1924). C. cambagei R. Baker (cited in synonymy by J. Black, 1948) is a synonym for C. cristata subsp. cristata.

Common name: Black oak (in S.Aust.), belah (in eastern States).

Description:
Dioecious tree 4-15 m high, with mostly ascending hoary branchlets; articles terete, smooth, glaucous, with a line of white hairs along each groove, 7-15 mm long, 0.9-1.5 mm diam.; phyllichnia flat with a very slight central ridge; teeth 9-11, shortly spreading, 0.7-0.9 mm long.

Male spikes 1-3 cm long, dense, c. 7 whorls per cm; bracteoles persistent; anthers yellow, 1-1.5 mm long.

Cone on a peduncle to 5 mm long, subglobular or cylindrical, 1.5-3 cm long, 15-20 mm diam.; fruiting bracteoles broadly acute, without a dorsal protuberance.

Distribution:  In low woodland on calcareous soils. The type subspecies is restricted to Qld and N.S.W.
