Zygophyllum ammophilum

Common name: Sand twinleaf

Description:
Small erect or ascending annual; leaflets linear, oblong or cuneate, 1-2.5 cm long, rounded, truncate or sometimes emarginate.

Flowers small; sepals 4, c. 3 mm long; petals narrow-oblanceolate to broad-obovate-cuneate, 1-4 mm long, entire or 3-lobed at the apex, white or yellow; stamens 4 or 8; filaments without or with lateral wings in the lower part.

Capsule campanulate-turbinate, 5-7 mm long, truncate, acutely 4-angled, drooping; seeds 1-4 in each cell, rugulose-granular or smooth, dark-brown to greyish.

Distribution:  Chiefly on red, white and grey sands and clay, sandy loams, and occasionally at margins of salt flats with gypsum on yellow-brown silt.

  All mainland States.

Taxonomic notes: There are several undescribed species at present included under Z. ammophilum which, in its narrow sense, is characterised as follows: leaflets linear-oblong, obtuse or truncate; petals narrow-oblanceolate, about as long as the sepals, white; stamens 4; filaments not winged; seeds 10-16 per capsule (usually 3 or 4 per cell). Z. ammophilum (sensu stricto) occurs in the eastern part of S.Aust., in north-western Vic., and in N.S.W. along the Rivers Murray and Lachlan. The above description embraces the undescribed species, whereas the distribution given applies only to Z. ammophilum in the strict sense.
