Perennial herbs with tuberous rootstocks; leaves net-veined, petioles sheathing at the base.

Inflorescence a dense-flowered simple spadix supported at its base by a leaf-like or coloured bract the spathe; flowers all unisexual, in the upper part (including the apex) male, in the lower part female; perianth absent; ovary l-5-celled, styles short.

Distribution:  6 species from Africa (C. Letty (1973) The genus Zantedeschia, Bothalia 11:5-26).
