Annuals or perennials; leaf blade flat; ligule a row of short hairs.

Inflorescence a spike-like panicle; spikelets 1-flowered, awnless, 2-5, subsessile on very short peduncles or panicle-branches which fall off with them; first glume minute or obsolete; second glume large, hard and furnished with 5 rows of hooked spines on the back; lemma and palea membranous and smaller.

Distribution:  About 6 species, mainly African.
