Description:
Herbs or shrubs; flowers bisexual, borne in axillary clusters subtended by 2 bracts.

Perianth sepaloid, tubular, persistent after flowering; stamens 8, arranged in 2 rows in the throat of the tube.

Fruit a nut.

Distribution:  About 20 species occurring in the Mediterranean and Asia.
