Derivation: Derivation not explained, but probably from the Greek tetra, four; referring to the anthers.

Description:
Perennials.

Spikelets with 1 bisexual flower, few in a usually unbranched raceme; rhachilla articulated above the glumes; glumes small, much shorter than the lemmas; sterile lemmas hardened, not awned, usually pubescent: fertile lemma similar to the upper sterile lemma in size, shape and texture: palea faintly l-nerved; stamens 4.

Distribution:  4 species confined to Australia.
