Derivation: Greek tainia, a band or ribbon; ather, an awn; alluding to the flat awn of the lemma.

Description:
Annuals or perennials; leaf blade broad; ligule very short.

Inflorescence a spike; spikelets 2 or 3 together, 3- or 4-flowered; glumes 2, 1-5-nerved, about equalling the spikelet and often placed side by side in front of it; lemma rounded on the back and bluntly keeled towards the apex, 3-5-nerved.

Distribution:  About 2 species from the Mediterranean to Asia. 1 naturalised in Australia.
