Description:
Rhizomatous; stems wiry and decumbent, to 2 m long; nodes glabrous; sheaths tardily loose, often torn or deciduous, glabrous; ligule obtuse, lacerate, 2-3 mm long; auricles glabrous; blades 5 (rarely 3)-7.5 cm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, glabrous or scaberulous.
Panicle pyramidal, 15-25 cm long, expanded widely, 8-15 cm wide (excluding the awns); axis, branches and pedicels plumose; glumes gaping, acute, inflated, hirsute; lower glume 7-12 (usually 8-10) mm long; upper glumes 7-9 (rarely to 11) mm long; floret cylindrical, 4.5-6.5 (rarely to 10) mm long (excluding the awn); lemma black, tuberculate, glabrous except for white hairs on the lower half of the lemma margins; callus 0.5-0.8 mm long, straight and blunt; awn 2-5 cm long, with 1 bend; column 0.8-1.5 (rarely to 2)cm long, scabrous; palea 50% the lemma length.
