Derivation: After Count Kaspar von Sternberg, 1761-1838, an Austrian botanist.

Description:
Bulbous herbs; leaves basal, linear.

Flowers erect, solitary at the summit of the leafless scape and subtended by a large membranous bract; perianth funnel-shaped to campanulate, regular, with a very short tube, corona 0; stamens 6, inserted in the mouth of the tube; anthers versatile; ovary 3-celled, with numerous ovules on the axile placentas; style filiform, capitate.

Fruit intermediate between a capsule and a berry, many-seeded.

Distribution:  8 species in the Mediterranean and eastern Europe.
