Black (1948) recognised three varieties of which one (var. caespitosa) is here treated as a distinct species, one (var. palustris) is retained here as an introduced variety, and one (var. tenella) is treated as a native variety. Jacobs and Pickard (1981), Plants of New South Wales, do not refer to the first of these, treat var. palustris as an incorrect identification of S. angustifolia Hook., J. Bot. (Hooker) 1:250 (1834), a native in Qld; N.S.W.; Vic.; Tas. and S. Aust. and treat var. tenella as a synonym for an as yet un-named species native in S. Aust.; N.S.W. and Vic.
