Common name: Goldenrod.
Description:
Herb 1-2 m high; stolons present; stem unbranched between the base and the inflorescence, glabrous or subglabrous; radical leaves few, petiolate, soon withering; cauline leaves numerous, sessile, acuminate, lanceolate, with 1-3 prominent longitudinal veins, 2-12 cm long, 4-20 mm wide; surfaces glabrous; margins entire to serrate, scabrous; panicle dense, pyramidal, 5-25 cm long; branches spreading, sparsely pubescent.
Capitula pedunculate, 5-6 mm long, yellow; involucre 3--4 mm long; bracts linear-lanceolate, yellow-green; ray florets 9-15; ligules 1-2 mm long.
Achenes 1-2 mm long, sparsely pubescent; pappus 2-3 mm long.

Biology:
A variable species divided into varieties, subspecies or segregate species by some American authors. The naturalised plants resemble the closely related S. gigantea Aiton in having glabrous stems, and may be derived from ornamental cultivars or hybrids.
