Derivation: Latin sinapis, mustard; in reference to the flavour of the seeds.

Description:
Annual herbs.

Inflorescence ebracteate; sepals spreading; petals short-clawed; stamens 6; median nectariferous glands present.

fruit a siliqua, dehiscent, beaked; beak usually flattened, usually 1-seeded; valves 3-7-veined; seeds globose, 1 row per locule; cotyledons conduplicate; radicle incumbent.

Distribution:  10 species from Europe and the Mediterranean; 2 established in Australia.
