Derivation: Greek skilla, the sea-onion.

Description:
Rootstock a bulb; leaves all basal, flat, channelled, linear or lanceolate.

Flowers usually bluish, in a raceme terminating the leafless stem or scape which is 20-100 cm high; each pedicel with a bract at the base; perianth persistent, the 6 segments free, flat, equal; stamens 6, the filaments filiform, connate at the base; anthers versatile; style filiform, undivided; ovary 3-celled, with several to many ovules in each cell.

Capsule ellipsoid, with several black angled or subglandular seeds.

Distribution:  Probably about 50 species in Europe, Africa and Asia. Several species widely cultivated in temperate Australia.
