Description:
Rhizome slow-creeping, clad with glossy dark-brown hairs; 6-22 cm high; sterile fronds rare, simple, subterete, smooth or slightly asperous; fertile fronds simple, terminated by a soriferous head 1-2 cm long, 2-4 mm broad, 5-6 times as long as broad, with 10-15 pairs of fertile lobes.

In S.Aust. this species is usually found on raised soil mounds in swamps or under scrub in moist situations. It is often found associated with S. bifida. There appear to be intermediate forms between these two species in S. Aust. populations.
