Derivation: Latin sagittarius, appertaining to an arrow; referring to the shape of the leaf.

Description:
Aquatic plants; leaf blade linear to ovate, sometimes sagittate.

Flowers unisexual, some bisexual; inflorescence of several simple or rarely slightly branched whorls, with the upper flowers male; stamens numerous; filaments broad; carpels numerous, free, spirally arranged; style conical.

Fruit 1-seeded.

Distribution:  Cosmopolitan, with about 20 species, 4 naturalised in Australia.
