Ranunculus robertsonii

Synonymy: Ranunculus lappaceus

Common name: Slender buttercup.

Description:
Perennial herb, 5-25 cm high; roots fleshy, tuberous, 1-3 mm thick at the base, tapering abruptly to 0.5 mm or less in diameter; stem simple or branching, with 1-3 flowers, with short appressed hairs; basal leaves few; petioles 1-9 cm long, with hairs like those on the stem; lamina-ovate to deltoid, 12-25 mm long, 8-22 mm wide, deeply ternately or biternately lobed or, more often, pinnately dissected into 3-9 segments and the segments deeply lobed, lobes lanceolate to narrow-linear, acute.

Flowers 1.5-2.5 cm diam.; sepals 5, broad-lanceolate to ovate, 3-5.5 mm long, concave, spreading, apex hooded, hirsute outside or rarely glabrous, centre green, margins membranous; petals 5, obovate-cuneate, 8-14 mm long, 4.5-8 mm wide, usually shallowly emarginate, the 3 primary nerves forked at or below the nectary; nectary 0.2-0.5 mm above the petal base, nectary-lobe cuneate, 1.5-2 mm long, 0.8-1.2 mm broad, truncate or emarginate, attached laterally to the petal for a half to three-quarters of its length; stamens 30-35.

Carpels 15-35; achenes in a globular to ellipsoidal head, 3-5 mm long, semi-orbicular, lenticular, 1.1-1.5 mm long, 1-1.3 mm dorsiventrally, 0.6-0.9 mm thick, margins narrowly keeled, lateral faces irregularly dimpled; beak slender, 0.9-1.2 mm long, straight with a recurved tip; fruiting torus 2-3 mm long, 0.5-0.7 mm diam.; staminal zone glabrous; achene zone hirsute.
