Trees with deciduous or evergreen leaves; over-winter .buds each protected by several scale leaves.
Male flowers in drooping catkins, with 4-12 stamens; female flower usually with a 3-celled ovary and 3 flattened styles.
Cup surrounding the fruit (acorn) symmetrical.
About 450 Northern Hemisphere species. The genus includes several evergreen species, such as Q. ilex L., the European evergreen oak, and Q. suber L., the cork oak.
