Derivation: Latin for the oak.

Description:
Trees with deciduous or evergreen leaves; over-winter .buds each protected by several scale leaves.

Male flowers in drooping catkins, with 4-12 stamens; female flower usually with a 3-celled ovary and 3 flattened styles.

Cup surrounding the fruit (acorn) symmetrical.

Distribution:  About 450 Northern Hemisphere species. The genus includes several evergreen species, such as Q. ilex L., the European evergreen oak, and Q. suber L., the cork oak.
