Citation: L., Sp.Pl. 441 (1753).

Derivation: Greek phyton, plant; Persian laka, to dye; alluding to the red dye from some species of this genus.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: None

Description:
Perennial herbs, shrubs or trees.

Flowers in leaf-opposed racemes, bisexual or unisexual; perianth-segments almost free; stamens 6-8, surrounding the circle of more or less free carpels in the centre of a disk.

Distribution:  About 35 species. P. dioica is a South American dioecious tree in cultivation.
