Description:
Culms usually 1-4.5 m high; leaves narrowly lanceolate, attenuate or rarely illiform, stiff- or pungent-pointed, 12-50 x 1-2.5 cm, scabrid beneath (at least in the upper half).
Panicle 10-35 cm long, sometimes plume-like, brownish; spikelets 8-14 mm long, with the lowest flower male, followed by a few bisexual flowers; glumes conspicuously unequal in length, glabrous; lemma usually 1-nerved, glabrous, callus with long silky hairs.
