Description:
Mostly perennials; leaves variable; ligule membranous.

Inflorescence of spikes or racemes forming an umbel or panicle; spikelets 1-flowered, not awned, plano-convex, with the flat outer face (first lemma) turned away from the rather broad flat or triquetrous rhachis of the raceme (spikelet abaxial); first glume minute or wanting, second glume membranous; first lemma equal to the second glume, second (fertile) lemma and palea about as long as the second glume, hardened round the grain.

Distribution:  About 250 species from warm areas. (Bor in Rechinger (1970) Fl. Iranica 70:493-495.)
