Citation: Engelm. in Gray, Mem.Amer. Acad. 4:52 (1849) var. discata (Griffiths) L. Benson & Walkington, Ann. Miss. Bot. Gard. 52:265 (1965).

Synonymy: O. discata Griffiths, Rep. Mo. Bot. Gard. 19:266 (1908); O. engelmannii Hort., non Salm-Dyck.

Common name: None

Description:
Often prostrate or sprawling; joints flattened, orbicular to elliptic, to 40 cm long and 22 cm wide, mostly spiny throughout; spines white or ashy-grey, 1-4 sometimes to 10, to 7 cm long; areoles distant, lower ones spineless; glochids to 1 cm long; leaves deciduous.

Flowers yellow, sometimes red at the base, to 8 cm across.

Fruits red, c. 3 cm long, mostly spineless.

Distribution:    native to south-western U.S.A. and Mexico.

Conservation status: naturalised

Flowering time: late spring — summer.
