Description:
Annuals decumbent to erect, with few to many branches to 20 cm long from a basal rosette, with a tap root, covered with more or less appressed hairs with a broad base rarely formed; leaves opposite to alternate, densely clustered, subpetiolate but often with a short sheath in the basal rosette becoming alternate, widely spaced, sessile, oblanceolate to oblong, rarely lanceolate, 1-3.5 x 0.3-0.6 cm, bluntly acute to rounded.
Inflorescence terminal with 1 or 2 scorpioid cymes with pedicellate flowers loosely arranged, with leaf-like bracts; sepals connate to one-third of their length, 2-3 mm long or to 4 mm when fruiting, with lobes lanceolate, acute, covered with forward-directed appressed hairs; corolla narrowly tubular, blue, glabrous except for saccate protrusions in the throat, 2-2.5 mm long; lobes oblong, c. 0.8 mm long, with a rounded apex; stamens inserted below the throat of the corolla tube, with anthers almost sessile, narrowly ovoid, c. 0.5 mm long, tapering into a point; ovary 4-lobed, with a style inserted near the base, c. 0.5 mm long, stout, with a terminal capitate stigma.
Mericarp ovoid, with the outer surface flattened and tapering towards the apex, finely hairy, surrounded by a short rim with few stout spines terminating in a barbed apex.
