Family: Menyanthaceae
Nymphoides crenata

Citation: Kuntze, Rev. Gen. Pl. 2:429 (1891).

Synonymy: Limnanthemum crenatum F. Muell., Trans. Phil. Soc. Vict. 1:17 (1854).

Common name: Wavy marshwort.

Description:
Perennial; stems to 3 m long, floating, stoloniferous; petioles 8-42 mm long on the basal leaves, less on the stem leaves; blades of the basal leaves broad-ovate to more or less circular, crenate, deeply cordate, 3-12 rarely to 20 cm long; blades of the stem leaves smaller, sometimes reniform.

Flowers in spaced pairs along a short inflorescence or else 8-14 in a cluster subtended by 1-4 stem leaves; pedicels 4-10 rarely to 14 cm long; calyx 5.5-10 sometimes to 16 mm long; corolla 20-40 sometimes to 50 mm diam., yellow (or, not in S.Aust., orange); corolla lobes usually 5 occasionally 4 or 6, with broad laciniate wings and keel; stigmas mostly 5, each a vertical papillate wing.

Capsule 6-9 rarely only 4 mm long, usually much shorter than the calyx; seeds ellipsoid but strongly laterally compressed, 100-580. rarely only 20 per capsule, usually 0.6-0.9 but ranging from 0.45-1.2 mm long, straw-coloured to a light tan-brown, smooth or tuberculate, without a caruncle.

Distribution:  Fresh water to 1.5 m deep in swamps, lagoons, channels and streams; also frequent in temporarily inundated depressions.

Conservation status: native

Flowering time: all months; chiefly Sept. — May in south — eastern Australia.
