Derivation: Latin mirabilis, wonderful.

Description:
Perennial herbs, erect, glabrous or glandular-pubescent; leaves opposite, petiolate.

Flowers showy, in few-flowered cymes, subsessile, each subtended by a 5-lobed involucre; petaloid part of perianth 5-lobed, much longer than the lower part; stamens 3-6, attached at the base of the perianth; ovary erect, subsessile, within the lower part of the perianth; style simple, capitate with short lobes to fimbriate; anthocarp with few to many ribs, striations or knobs, subglobular.

Distribution:  About 60 species, mainly American.
