Citation: Miller, Gard. Dict. abr. edn 4 (1754).

Derivation: Malus, the Latin name for the apple tree.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: None

Description:
Large shrubs or trees, sometimes spiny below, deciduous; leaves stipulate, petiolate, entire (lobed in juvenile phases), simple in our species, pubescent.

Inflorescence a corymbose cluster; sepals 5; petals 5, shortly clawed; stamens numerous; styles 3-5; carpels 2-5, united with and enclosed within the receptacle; ovules 2 per locule.

Fruit a globose pome, greenish, yellowish or flushed red, without stone cells in our species.

Distribution:  About 35 species, from Europe, Asia and North America.

Uses: The cultivated apple widely grown in temperate areas of the world; a few other species, crab apples, grown as ornamentals.

Taxonomic notes: Closely related to Pyrus and not always separated by taxonomists.
