Common name: Western Australian blue lupin, blue lupin.

Description:
Robust annual, 20-120 cm tall, erect, with vigorous lateral branching; stems shortly villous with hairs more or less 1 mm long; leaves on 5-10 cm long velvety-pubescent petioles with 7-11 digitate oblong-lanceolate leaflets 25-60 ~ 7-12 mm and sericeous on both faces; racemes 5-15 mm long, on short stout peduncles.

Flowers blue, verticillate to rarely subalternate, on short pedicels about one-third the length of the calyx; bracts lanceolate, c. 5 mm long, sericeous, caducous; bracteoles linear, c. 2 mm long, sericeous, persistent; calyx c. 10 mm long, deeply 2-lipped, upper lip deeply 2-partite, lower lip longer, shallowly 3-toothed, sericeous with golden hairs; standard orbicular, 12-17 x 14-19 mm, bright-blue apart from a centro-basal yellowish white spot reaching to c. 3 mm from the upper margin; keel white, blunt, with tip dark-blue, equalling the blue wings; scent very slight (spicy) or absent.

Pods sessile, oblong, 40-55 ~ 13-16 mm, densely villous, compressed, 3-5-seeded; seeds 6-9 x 4-7 x 3-4 mm, orbicular-quadrangular, compressed, testa tuberculate, light-grey or more commonly brown, with blackish markings including a narrow arc around the hilum.

Distribution:  Mainly western Mediterranean, elsewhere cultivated and/or naturalised, but so far not recorded as naturalised in S.Aust.

S.Aust.: EP, NL, MU, SL, KI, SE.   W.Aust.; N.S.W.   Originated in the Mediterranean region.

Conservation status: naturalised

Flowering time: mainly Aug. — Nov.
