Description:
Perennials with leaves densely clustered in one to few basal rosettes and with a slightly woody base; leaves oblanceolate to obovate, rarely spathulate, 1.5-5 cm long, 7-18 mm broad, obtuse, rounded to emarginate, tapering into a slender base, entire, with the central vein more or less visible.
Inflorescence a panicle angular-ovate in profile, with branches usually strictly distichous, with each spike-like part-inflorescence with 5-9 rarely to 12 loosely arranged spikelets each with 1 or 2 rarely 3 flowers; sterile bracts with the outer ones with the midrib shorter or as long as the hyaline margin, with the inner one membranous; calyx 4.5-6 mm long, with the funnel- to salver-shaped tube hairy at the base, with the midrib continued into the apex of pointed lobes; corolla funnel-shaped with spreading lobes truncate to emarginate, deep-violet.
