Citation: Hook. f., Fl . Tasm. 2:66 (1858).

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: Austral rush.

Description:
Stems from a shortly creeping rootstock, 60-120 cm high, usually 2-4 mm diam., firm, pith interrupted with large air-spaces, cylindrical; stem striations 35-60; stomata deeply sunken; leaf-blades 0.

Panicle compound, lateral, the clusters of the flowers usually forming subglobose heads often c. 3 cm diam4 the erect primary bract much exceeding the panicle; flowers pale; segments 2.2-3 mm long, acute, the inner with stiff narrow wings, exceeding or equal to (rarely shorter than) the obtuse ovoid capsule which is pale above and darker below; stamens usually 3 or 4.

Distribution:  Grows in wet or seasonally wet grassland often in the shade.

S.Aust.: SL, SE.   N.S.W.; Vic.; Tas.   New Zealand.

Conservation status: native

Flowering time: throughout the year.
