Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 125 (1753).

Derivation: Latin name for the holm oak, Quercus ilex, whose leaves resemble those of some species of Ilex.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: None

Description:
Evergreen shrubs or small trees; leaves often serrate or dentate.

flowers usually dioecious, cymose; petals 4, fused at the base; female flowers containing staminodes; male flowers containing an aborted ovary.

Distribution:  About 400 species; widespread except for North America. The tropical Australian native species has sometimes been placed in Byronia Endl. Pedley (1984), Fl. Aust. 22:199-204, records 2 Australian native species of which one is undescribed.
