Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 124 (1753).

Derivation: Greek name for a group of plants including this genus.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: None

Description:
Annual herbs with watery sap; leaves a with more or less clearly defined petiole, bipinnatisect, glabrous.

Sepals 2, free, caducous; petals 4 in two whorls with different shapes; stamens 4; stigma with two slender lobes, not persistent in fruit, on a distinct style tapering into a slender ovary.

Fruit narrowly ellipsoid, with seeds partly embedded in the placenta.

Distribution:  A genus of about 15 species mainly from the Mediterranean region and Asia Minor but a few extending to Mongolia and northern China.
