Description:
Small deciduous perennial herbs; corm campanulate, flattened at the base, with a tunic of overlapping woody scales; leaves several, mostly basal, equitant, lanceolate to linear, flat, soft-textured.

Scape erect, terete, wiry, simple or few-branched; spike loose; flowers sessile, solitary in each spathe, actinomorphic; bracts short, ovate, entire, herbaceous to membranous, paired, subequal; tube straight, narrow below, slightly widened near the mouth; lobes longer than the tube, subequal; stamens inserted on the tube, equilateral; style branches 3, filiform, entire, spreading at the mouth of the perianth tube.

Capsule ovoid, membranous; seeds numerous, small, globose. (P. Goldblatt (1984) Jl S. Afr. Bot. 50:15-141.) 55 species in southern Africa; 1 naturalised in Australia.
