Description:
Slender glabrous annuals; leaf blade flat or intolied; ligule short.
Inflorescence a slender spike; spikelets 1-flowered, sessile, solitary, distichous and half-embedded in the alternate notches of the rhachis of the spike; glume 1 (except in the terminal spikelet which has 2 glumes), stiff, 5-nerved, closing the cavity of the rhachis; lemma shorter, hyaline, 2-nerved; each spikelet falling off entire attached to its joint of the rhachis (but often rather tardy).
