Derivation: Latin name for the fig tree and its fruit.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: Figs.

Description:
Trees or shrubs with pinnately nerved petiolate leaves; stipules caducous.

Flowers numerous, affixed to the inner walls of a hollow fleshy globular or ovoid or pear-shaped receptacle with a small orifice at the summit; both sexes with 3-6 perianth-segments; stamens usually 1 or 2; style lateral, simple or bifid.

Distribution:  About 800 species, mainly tropical; few native to Australia including F. macrophylla Desf., the Moreton Bay fig.
