Exocarpos aphyllus

Citation: R. Br., Prod. Fl. Nov. Holl. 357 ( 1810).

Synonymy: Xylophyllos aphyllus (R. Br.)Kuntze, Rev. Gen. Pl. 589 (1891); E. leptomerioides F. Muell. ex Miq., Nederl. Kruidk. Arch. 4:103 (1856). , Exocarpos aphylla, Exocarpus aphyllus

Common name: Leafless ballart, stiff (or jointed separate) cherry, currant-bush.

Description:
Much-branched shrub or small tree to 3.5 m high; branches stout, rigid, more or less spreading, round or flat-ribbed and stellate-hairy when young; leaves reduced to ovate caducous scales less than 1 mm long.

Flowers in short dense sessile spikes or clusters 2-4 mm long; rhachis pubescent; fruit ellipsoid to globular, usually stellate-hairy at first, 3-5 mm long, almost black when ripe.

Fruiting pedicel globular, 7-8 mm diam., broader than the fruit when fresh, withering to obconical, cream-coloured turning red.
