Description:
Perennials, glabrous; leaves distichous; leaf blade flat or folded; ligule short, membranous.

Inflorescence of spikes in a short raceme; spikelets with 1 bisexual floret, sessile, arranged alternately in 2 rows on 1 side of the slender rhachis of the spikes, straw-coloured to brown; glumes 2, subequal, oblongelliptic, 1-nerved, keeled, aristate from an apical notch, persistent; fertile (lower) lemma somewhat laterally folded, 1-nerved, mucronate, densely long-ciliate;the sterile lemma single, obtuse to truncate, not mucronate, inflated, shortly stipitate; callus short, bearded.

Distribution:  8-12 species in America, Asia and Africa. (Lazarides (1972) Aust. J. Bot. suppl, ser. 5).
