Citation: Miller, Gard. Dict. edn 4 (1754).

Derivation: Latin name for E. sativa, possibly derived from uro, I burn, from the taste of the seeds.

Description:
Annual herbs.

Sepals erect, inner pair saccate; petals clawed; stamens 6; median nectariferous glands present.

Fruit a siliqua, dehiscent, beaked; beak seedless; valves somewhat flattened, parallel to the septum, with 1 prominent midrib; seeds in 2 rows; cotyledons conduplicate.

Distribution:  6 species in the Mediterranean and north-east Africa; 1 species established in Australia.
