Emex spinosa

Citation: Campderá, Monog. Rumex 58 (1819).

Synonymy: Rumex spinosus L., Sp. Pl. 337 (1753).

Common name: Lesser Jack.

Description:
Glabrous annual with many or few prostrate to erect stems to 50 cm long or more, sometimes reddish; leaves petiolate, ovate to oblong, truncate or cordate at the base, to 12 cm long.

Female flowers sessile; fruiting perianth 6-8 mm long, c. 4 mm wide, with a broad truncate base, the spines spreading or reflexed, the inner perianth-segments lanceolate, acute.

Distribution:    W.Aust. (probably before 1938); Vic.   Native to the Mediterranean, naturalised in South America; Canary Islands.
