Common name: Sand couch-grass, sea wheat-grass.
Description:
Glabrous perennial, 25-80 cm high, with long creeping rhizomes; stems rigid; leaf blades flat with the margins inrolled, densely and minutely hairy on the upper surface.
Spike narrow, 5-20 cm long, rhachis readilly disarticulating; spikelets 3-9-flowered, 10-20 mm long; rhachilla not disarticulating; glumes a little shorter than the spikelet, subulate or lanceolate to oblong, awnless, 6-12-veined; lemma about as long as the glumes, obtuse or emarginate, unawned.

Melderis (1980), Flora Europaea 5:197, is followed in treating this species in Elymus although other recent authors have placed it in Agropyron, Elytrigia or Thinopyrum.
